March Meet The Maker

What a busy time we have had here at KWJ! This month I decided to take part in Joanne Hawkers #MarchMeetTheMaker challenge over on Instagram. Previously I have not been entirely successful with keeping up to date with social media challenges but despite an epic iPhone failure leaving me incommunicado for a good few days, and a bout of the sickness bug kindly donated by the small one, I have managed (so far) with the majority of the posts - just a few to catch up on this week. If you would like to see my #MarchMeetTheMaker contributions, pop over to my Instagram feed and see more about my story and KWJ. It is also very refreshing as a maker to see so many others posting similar things, feeling like you're all in the same boat juggling life and making, and bringing makers together despite the sometimes solitary existence of the self employed.  The challenge has also made me plan ahead a bit more with my photographs and content, and think about the prompts and how to interpret them.  You can see others exciting stories by having  browse of the #MarchMeetTheMaker hashtag!                   Totally Locally Scarborough and Yorkshire in Business At the start of the month I went to the Totally Locally Scarborough business meet up, again at the fabulous Clark's cafe in the town centre. It was great to see some new faces and find some great new contacts for services I may need in the future.  TL Scarborough is organised by the wonderfully helpful Jenn from Yorkshire in Business. In preparation for the change in Data Protection legislation which will be in effect as of May this year, I attended a session at Yorkshire in Business this month. It broke down the hugely intimidating new rules and regs into relevant information on how it will affect small businesses and gave us a few ideas as to how we can implement it in our own business practices. It is nowhere near as complicated as the legal jargon made it sound and I am now a lot more confident in how I can ensure I comply with the new GDPR by the end of May. If you would like to read any further information on what GDPR is or how it might affect you then have a look at the ICO's website. Etsy North Yorkshire Coast and Moors As a result of the TL Scarborough meet ups, we have now formed an Etsy Team for our area of which I am the Captain (eeeek!). You can now find us on Etsy as the North Yorkshire Coast and Moors team, covering (as the name suggests) the North Yorkshire Coast from Whitby down to Filey, and the Moors as far inland as Malton. We have a neighbouring Team in York if you are a little bit closer to them. I have been running some Etsy workshops with fellow seller Jenny from Scarborough Scribbles for local businesses who want to expand their selling onto the Etsy marketplace and help improve those who already have shops but needed a bit of a spring clean. We are hoping to keep this as a monthly meet up where we can get together, have a bit of a natter and also iron out any problems we are having with our shops. We are hoping to establish the group enough to be able to take part in Etsy Made Local events in the future, and even have some local pop up shops and events. Its very exciting times!! If you've not done so already, pop over and have a look at my Etsy shop. In other news....... This month I took part in my first Wedding Fair at the Royal Hotel in Scarborough. Unfortunately it was the very weekend that the Beast from the East II descended on us so it made getting to the event a little tricky for both exhibitors and happy couples! Never the less we braved it and have a lovely afternoon. It was an excellent opportunity to explore a new area of business for me, how my jewellery can fit in to and appeal to the wedding market and what I actually need to take to a Wedding Show that differs from usual selling events. It was also fantastic to meet local businesses already well versed in the wedding industry and I got to sample some of the delightful Amelia's Chocolate - yum!!! This month has also be very busy preparing for the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate next month. There has been lots of jewellery making, polishing, display stand painting and leaflet designing. Hopefully it will all come together nicely after Easter weekend and I look forward to seeing you there on stand 110 when we open on Sunday 8th April!   In true work life balance we have been busy behind the scenes with Mothers Day and the small one's first ballet show with Yorkshire Coast School of Ballet. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house as a group of little 3 year old sunshines danced away in their bright yellow tutus! Fingers crossed we have a few sunny days for the Easter Holidays ahead, there are so many exciting things to see and do up here and we're really looking forward to exploring the wonderful North Yorkshire coast when we have some dry days. If not, a chill on the sofa stuffing ourselves silly with Easter eggs will do too!! Thank you for reading and I'll see you on the other side of BCTF!!
